Elle Simone Scott Obituary, America’s Test Kitchen Tv Personality Dead At 49

Elle Simone Scott, 49, the pioneering chef, food stylist and television personality who broke barriers as a cast member on PBS’s “America’s Test Kitchen,” died Jan. 5, 2026, her family confirmed. Scott died after a period of illness; no further details about the cause of death have been publicly released.

Born LaShawnda Sherise Simone Scott in Detroit, Michigan in 1976, she grew up in a religious family where communal meals and shared recipes inspired her lifelong passion for food. Her early experiences in the kitchen — particularly cooking with her great-grandmother — shaped her belief in food as both nourishment and cultural expression.

After earning a master’s degree in entertainment business, Scott initially worked as a social worker. She later transitioned into the culinary world, training at the Culinary Institute of New York and gaining experience as a cook aboard cruise ships. Her talent and drive led to roles as a food stylist and culinary producer for prominent media outlets, including the Food Network, Cooking Channel, Bravo and PBS affiliates.

In 2016, Scott became the first African American woman to appear as a regular on “America’s Test Kitchen,” a long-running PBS program devoted to teaching home cooks practical skills in the kitchen. Audiences and colleagues alike admired her warm presence, expert technique and ability to make complex recipes approachable.

Beyond television, Scott was a dedicated mentor and advocate. In 2013, she founded SheChef Inc., a professional networking organization aimed at supporting women of color in the culinary arts by providing mentorship, resources and community. Her work helped elevate underrepresented voices in a field historically dominated by others. (Wikipedia)

Scott also used her platform to champion food equity and health advocacy. After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2016, she became a vocal supporter of cancer awareness and access to nutritious food, drawing on her own journey through treatment and survivorship to inspire others.

Colleagues described Scott as a generous spirit whose influence extended well beyond the kitchen. “Elle had a rare ability to connect with people through food, curiosity and kindness,” one fellow chef said. Tributes from the culinary community and fans poured in following the announcement of her death.

Elle Simone Scott is survived by her family, friends and the countless chefs, cooks and home cooks she inspired. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
